Altea, the White Pearl of the Costa Blanca: Art, Blue Domes and Winding Streets

Altea, the White Pearl of the Costa Blanca

Some places are worth visiting because they appear in every travel guide. Others make you think after only ten minutes:

I could actually live here.

For many people, Altea belongs firmly in that second category.

Located on the northern Costa Blanca, this whitewashed town climbs the hills above the Mediterranean. From a distance, Altea is instantly recognisable by its white buildings and the distinctive blue-and-white domes rising above the old town.

But Altea is more than a beautiful backdrop for holiday photos.

It is a place where art, history, the sea, the mountains and everyday Spanish life come unusually close together.

Altea, the White old town

A town that seems made for photography

Walk uphill towards the historic centre and it quickly becomes clear why Altea is often called the White Pearl of the Costa Blanca.

White façades, blue skies, wrought-iron balconies, flowerpots along the walls and bougainvillea climbing over houses.

In between, narrow streets and stairways disappear around corners without telling you exactly where they lead.

And that is part of Altea's charm.

You don't really need the perfect walking route.

Choose a street because it looks beautiful. Take the next staircase. Turn around and admire the view. Discover a small shop, studio or terrace and simply continue from there.

Getting a little lost is part of experiencing Altea.

The blue dome: Altea's most famous landmark

At the top of the hill lies Plaza de la Iglesia, home to the church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo.

Its striking blue ceramic-tiled domes have become the visual symbol of Altea.

On a sunny day, the contrast is almost perfect: white buildings, deep blue tiles and a Mediterranean sky behind them.

But don't walk up only to photograph the church.

The surrounding area is just as important.

Around the square you'll find terraces, restaurants, small shops and streets leading to different viewpoints. From several spots you can look across the rooftops towards the coastline and the Mediterranean.

Why does Altea feel so different?

The Costa Blanca has many well-known seaside resorts where daily life revolves around beaches, promenades and tourism.

Altea has a different character.

The historic centre has a distinctly artistic and almost bohemian atmosphere. Among the white houses you'll find studios, galleries, small boutiques and craft shops.

Altea has attracted artists and creative people for a long time, and you notice that as you walk through town.

It isn't really a place where you need to tick twenty attractions off a list.

Altea encourages a slower rhythm.

Coffee on a small square.

A glass of wine while the sun goes down.

Walking into a gallery simply because the door is open.

Or sitting somewhere and watching daily life pass by.

Altea is more than its old town

Most famous photographs of Altea are taken high in the historic centre, but everyday life naturally extends well beyond those whitewashed streets.

Down by the coast you'll find the promenade, harbour and a variety of beaches and coves.

The coastline around Altea looks different from some of the southern parts of the Costa Blanca. Don't expect endless stretches of fine sand everywhere. You will also find pebble beaches and rocky coves.

What you gain is impressive scenery, with clear water, mountains in the background and a coastline that often feels less built-up than some larger resorts.

And that immediately shows why location is so personal.

If having a large sandy beach outside your door is your top priority, another part of the Costa Blanca may suit you better.

If you value the sea, mountains, atmosphere and character, you may fall in love with Altea.

That is why it is worth reading our guide How do you choose the right place to live on the Costa Blanca? before choosing a location based only on beautiful property photos.

What is it really like to live in Altea?

Spending an afternoon wandering through Altea and living there permanently are obviously two very different experiences.

As a place to live, Altea particularly appeals to people who value atmosphere and surroundings.

You get the combination of sea and mountains, a historic centre, restaurants, shops and several residential areas outside the busiest part of the old town.

But there is also a practical side.

Altea is hilly.

That romantic cobbled street that looks wonderful in a holiday photo can feel slightly different when you are carrying shopping uphill every day.

Anyone searching for a property here should therefore look beyond the view from the terrace.

Pay attention to:

  • slopes and accessibility;
  • distance to everyday amenities;
  • parking or garage availability;
  • actual distance to the sea;
  • summer crowds;
  • winter atmosphere;
  • orientation of the property;
  • maintenance if it will be a second home.

A beautiful property only becomes truly attractive when the surrounding area also suits your everyday life.

Old town, apartment by the sea or villa in the hills?

A property in Altea can mean completely different things.

You might choose a character property near the historic centre.

You could look for an apartment closer to the coast.

Or perhaps a modern villa in the hills suits you better, where views, outdoor space and privacy matter more than being able to walk into town.

The differences are significant.

Two properties may be only a few kilometres apart on the map and still offer completely different lifestyles.

That is why our advice is simple:

First decide how you want to live in Spain. Then find the property that fits that lifestyle.

Who is Altea right for?

Altea can be particularly attractive if you:

  • enjoy a Mediterranean town with character;
  • like having art, restaurants and culture nearby;
  • appreciate both the sea and the mountains;
  • don't necessarily need a large sandy beach outside your door;
  • are looking for a second home in a distinctive location;
  • want to move permanently to Spain;
  • prefer atmosphere over a huge tourist promenade.

But Altea is not automatically the best choice for everyone.

If you mainly want nightlife, enormous sandy beaches or completely flat surroundings, another part of the Costa Blanca may suit you better.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

There is no single best place on the Costa Blanca. There is only the best place for you.

Experience Altea first, choose a home second

If you are seriously considering buying in Altea, try not to experience the town only as a tourist.

Live through an ordinary day there.

Go to the supermarket in the morning.

Try to find a parking space.

Walk from a potential neighbourhood to the centre.

See where the doctor, pharmacy and everyday shops are.

Visit the area in the evening.

And if possible, return outside the high season.

A place that feels fantastic in August can have a completely different atmosphere in January.

That doesn't have to be a disadvantage. You may discover that the quieter winter months are exactly what you love.

What does living in Altea really cost?

The purchase price of a property is never the whole story.

In addition to the property itself, you need to consider purchase costs, taxes, legal checks, maintenance and possible renovation or furnishing.

Don't let an attractive property absorb your entire budget.

You can read more in our guide to hidden costs when buying a property in Spain.

And don't let an unusually low asking price be the only reason you buy. In The cheapest house in Spain could become your most expensive mistake, we explain why buying cheaply is not always the same as buying wisely.

Discover Altea with CasaOthers

Altea is a perfect example of why the Costa Blanca should not be treated as one single residential area.

A few kilometres can take you from a historic street to a modern villa in the hills, or from an apartment by the sea to a quiet property with panoramic views.

That is why a good property search doesn't begin only with the question:

“What kind of house do I want?”

It should also begin with:

“How do I want to live here?”
